Counter-Strike is definitely a reference within the world of FPS games, being one of the most famous shooter sagas around. In the case of the Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite, this means you can open the box from either the driver or passenger side of the vehicle. One of the advantages in opting for a mid- or high-end box is easy access to the interior. But at 47 pounds, the SkyBox leaves plenty of leeway for hauling fairly heavy items (for reference, my Thule rack can handle 165 pounds and my vehicle’s roof is rated for the same). Weight is important to keep in mind as your rack system-whether from the manufacturer or aftermarket-as well as your specific vehicle will have weight limits. Combined with the bulky dimensions, it’s best to move the box with a partner (more on this in “ Installation and Removal” below). In terms of weight, the SkyBox 16 clocks in at 47 pounds. Finally, its 36-inch width works well with a narrow vehicle like my Alltrack, and you’ll have the option to add accessories like a bike rack on larger vehicles with wider cross bars. And we touched on the height above, but at 15 inches (interior dimensions are about 1 inch less), it does come with some limitations on what squeezes inside. I haven’t had any fit issues on my Volkswagen Alltrack, but to ensure it will fit, you’ll want to measure from your front cross bar to the closest contact point of the open hatch ( Yakima has a useful guide for nailing this down). Overall, it's long enough at 6 feet 9 inches to accommodate most skis and a fair amount of gear, but with ability to slide the clamps fore/aft, it works with a wide variety of vehicles. The dimensions of a roof box are a key consideration-you need to make sure it won't interfere with your vehicle's rear hatch-and this is one of the largest appeals of the SkyBox 16. This also impacts what you can fit inside, but it’s far from a deal breaker, and overall we’ve been very pleased with how much gear the SkyBox can hold. In addition, the four raised levers that secure the box to your vehicle’s crossbars do take up a little space along the interior and keep the floor from being completely flat. As such, you’ll run into issues stacking items that are long (like camping chairs) or especially tall (some strollers that have large 16-inch wheels won’t fit). It’s great for camping gear, but it’s only 15 inches tall at its peak (and those are the exterior dimensions) and lower towards the front. One thing to keep in mind with the SkyBox 16 is its aerodynamic shape does limit what you can haul to items that are fairly low-profile. It's worth noting for those with larger vehicles and a need to haul even more gear, Yakima offers the SkyBox in larger 18- and 21-cubic-foot capacities (Switchback’s founder picked up a SkyBox 21 for a big family move). Yakima lists the maximum length at 185 centimeters, but I can confirm it was just long enough for a couple pairs of 182-centimeter all-mountain skis plus a snowboard. And for winter-time use, the box easily swallows snowboards and skis. It required some strategic packing, but it stores an impressive amount (especially with items that are soft-sided and compressible). Its manageable size fits on most vehicles, and our model has accommodated bulky camping gear for a family of four, including a large tent, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, and a stove (plus a kid’s Strider bike). There are a wide range of cargo box designs and shapes on the market, but we’ve found the Yakima SkyBox 16 Carbonite hits the sweet spot in gear capacity for all-season use. To see how it stacks up to the competition, see our article on the best rooftop cargo boxes. Below we break down our experiences with the SkyBox 16. It has hauled everything from firewood and camping gear to skis and snowboards and performed nearly flawlessly throughout. We’ve had the 16-cubic-foot model on the top of our vehicle for a few years now and have found it to be endlessly useful. Yakima has been a leader in the cargo roof box game for some time, and their core and arguably most versatile product is the SkyBox Carbonite. 333 (20 for 60) with three home runs, two triples, 10 RBIs and a. Hip hop kept coming, kept pushing, kept playing until that was no longer possible. They got the word out about what was happening in their neighborhoods-neighborhoods much of mainstream, middle-class America was doing its best to ignore or run down. A growing movement of hopeful poets, visual artists, and urban philosophers added their visions and voices by whatever means available. Like a powerful star, this dance-party scene quickly drew other art forms into its orbit. Competition was, and remains, a prime motivator in the hip hop realm. It was a code that has flowed through hip hop ever since: 1) Use skills and whatever resources are available to create something new and cool 2) Emulate and imitate the genius of others but inject personal style until the freshness glows. The effect that night was electric, and soon other DJs in the Bronx were trying to outdo Herc. It was a technique that filled the floor with dancers who had spent days and weeks polishing their moves. He spun the same record on twin turntables, toggling between them to isolate and extend percussion breaks-the most danceable sections of a song. From a whole lot of nothing-and a whole lot of imagination-hip hop took form.ĭJ Tony Tone and DJ Kool Herc, 1979 © Joe ConzoĭJ Kool Herc is credited with throwing the switch at an August 1973 dance bash. It was the early 1970s and times were tougher than usual for the poorer parts of urban America. The elements of hip hop came together in the Bronx borough of New York City. Hip hop, in other words, is a way of living-a culture. But it also has blended and transcended them to become a means for seeing, celebrating, experiencing, understanding, confronting, and commenting on life and the world. Hip hop embraces these artistic elements, most definitely. IAnnotate 4 does your basics, such as letting you open and view PDFs and documents, but you can do so much more with the app than you may think. Want to maximize your productivity when it comes to PDFs and documents? Then iAnnotate is a great option to consider. For those who need this kind of workflow, there's no better app than LiquidText out there - and possibly no better workflow. The Apple Pencil makes all of this even better, giving users specific gestures to highlight and pull out annotations as they review documents. And all of this is lightning fast and wholly enjoyable, thanks to LiquidText's speedy and simple UI. You can pull annotations out from the document they belong to - like clippings or post-its - and organize them together or even link them along the right side of the screen. For instance, you could look at an introductory thesis statement next to its midpoint argument to see if it properly connects the dots. You can use multitouch gestures to pinch together large sections of a document. There's a better way to organize your research, and this app is it.Īt its core, LiquidText focuses on the pain point of annotating lengthy documents, giving users a number of tools to do it in a way wholly unlike any other PDF app on the market. Lawyer and Mac enthusiast David Sparks describes it as being "engineered around the idea of reviewing long PDF documents better." It looks at books filled with post-it notes and string-covered bulletin boards and laughs. A traditional sign-and-form-fill annotation app this is not - LiquidText is built for projects, novels, research papers, and dusty libraries. I've rewritten this intro to LiquidText about five times now, largely because the multitouch annotation app has this slippery way of defying description. PDF Viewer can even rearrange, delete, or insert blank pages within a PDF, though it doesn't have some of the more advanced combination features (like merging multiple PDFs or adding existing PDF pages into a document). For instance, if you're looking at a document, you'll be shown the tools for sharing, zooming, and browsing through annotations tap the annotation button, and the app brings you into Annotation mode, with its various tools - still simplified into easy-to-understand icons. Taking a page from Apple's own iWork suite, the app provides a series of nested views depending on which feature you're using. It is a perfect in-between for users who need a bit more than what the iOS Markup tool provides, but don't need the power of apps like PDF Expert or LiquidText.Ī PDF app's interface can frequently appear daunting to the average user, thanks in part to the sheer number of annotation options developers try to shove inside of them, but PDF Viewer smartly simplifies this process. PDF Viewer has a clean, simplistic interface and powerful annotation tools. It’s better to construct a productive digital environment from the ground up, with fewer temptations and better structure. Those sounds came in intermittent intervals for at least 15 minutes prior to the collapse, suggesting to engineers there were multiple pieces of rebar failing one after another. the investigation began to focus on an initial failure of internal rebar, since none of those witnesses saw any evidence of concrete failure. For this and other reasons, the results of the Herald/UW model represent an important step in understanding a possible collapse scenario but not the definitive result.īased on the accounts of six witnesses who first heard a series of booms culminating at 1:14 a.m. As such, the Herald reference model is based on the limited information available in the 1980 structural drawings, including the specified design strengths for the concrete and the reinforcing steel.įederal investigators with the National Institute of Standards and Technology will be able to make a more accurate model based on actual conditions as they probe the collapse debris and other data, including concrete core and rebar samples, which would help in gauging water damage that occurred over time. While it’s generally agreed that a model based on the actual conditions of the building prior to collapse would be more accurate in predicting the structure’s behavior, the Herald could not take that approach as the team did not have access to the site to conduct necessary tests. Each simulation mapped the resulting vertical deflections (downward movement of the slab), concrete cracking and steel stresses - conditions that could have been conducive to a collapse. Using this model as a reference point, a single parameter was changed to investigate the impact on the damage pattern and progression. Use computer modeling to test whether that origin could lead to the kind of progressive failure observed in post-collapse photos, specifically to check that the resulting damage would spread both all the way south to the pool deck perimeter AND into the tower itself.įirst, the Herald/UW built a model of the structure as designed to provide a baseline for comparison.Identify possible points of origin through an analysis of witness testimony, structural drawings, inspection reports and photos of post-collapse damage, including broken, corroded rebar. And the team at UW began to look for possible collapse sequences that began with rebar failing in a sequence, followed by a rapid collapse of the deck.Ĭomputer modeling involves a process of trial and error, testing and evaluating the feasibility of different scenarios.Įstablish a baseline for comparison by modeling the stresses on the level-one slab before the collapse and use the model to identify overstressed regions that might be susceptible to collapse. The loudest and final booms in the series came at 1:14 a.m. First, there was a series of intermittent but distinct - and increasingly loud - booms from just before 1 a.m. The witnesses described the collapse sequence as a three-part failure, each with distinct sounds that engineers can use as clues when they try to piece together what happened. The Herald partnered with University of Washington engineering professor Dawn Lehman to build a computer model and explore the following critical questions raised by their experiences: Where exactly could this collapse have started and how did it spread across the pool deck and into the tower to become one of the deadliest collapses in modern history? But a recent Miami Herald investigation based on 10 key eyewitness accounts found the collapse began somewhere on the pool deck seven minutes before the northern wing of the residential tower fell.
